SNF of milk from the lactometer reading (CLR) and fat %, by the BIS formula
Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Oct 2026.SNF, the solids in milk other than fat, is worked out from the corrected lactometer reading (CLR) at 27°C and the fat %. The Indian Standard IS 10083 formula is SNF = CLR ÷ 4 + 0.25 × fat + 0.44. A CLR of 28 with 4.0% fat gives 8.44% SNF.
Rates and rules read from BIS IS 10083:1982 (SNF from lactometer reading and fat) on 30 Oct 2026; they may have changed since.
"From lactometer (CLR)" is already selected under "SNF".
Enter the "Fat" % and the "Lactometer reading (CLR)" corrected to 27°C.
Leave the "Formula constant" at the BIS value of 0.44 unless your dairy uses another.
Read "SNF used", then open "How it was worked out" to see the formula with your figures.
Enter your readings to see the SNF, and the price the society pays for that milk.
Dairy cooperatives in India do not pay one flat price for milk. They test each sample for fat and SNF (solids-not-fat: protein, lactose and minerals) and pay for what the milk contains. This calculator works out that payment from your test results and your society's rates.
SNF from the lactometer. Many collection centres read SNF from a lactometer instead of a machine. The Indian Standard IS 10083, as amended in 1992, gives SNF = CLR ÷ 4 + 0.25 × fat + 0.44, where CLR is the lactometer reading corrected to 27°C. Some unions use a different last figure, so it can be changed. The standard itself calls this an estimate for routine use.
Litres or kilograms. Rates per kg of fat work on the weight of milk. If you measure in litres, the calculator multiplies by the density, 1.030 kg per litre unless you change it. A lactometer reading of 30 means a density of about 1.030.

The Indian Standard IS 10083, amended in 1992, gives SNF = CLR ÷ 4 + 0.25 × fat + 0.44. CLR is the lactometer reading corrected to 27°C. With a CLR of 28 and 4% fat, SNF is 7 + 1 + 0.44, which is 8.44%. Some unions use a different constant in place of 0.44.
A litre of milk weighs slightly more than one kilogram, because milk is denser than water. The calculator uses 1.030 kg per litre unless you change it. The lactometer reading gives the figure directly: density is about 1 plus the reading divided by 1,000, so a reading of 30 means about 1.030.
Not quite. IS 10083 itself says the lactometer method is for routine use and gives an estimate close to the laboratory (gravimetric) method, not a precise figure. Temperature matters too: the reading must be corrected to 27°C before it goes into the formula, using the table in the standard or the chart at the collection centre.
Societies may deduct for cattle feed, loans, insurance or share capital, or pay a separate bonus later. Some round fat and SNF readings to one decimal or pay only for full 0.1% steps. The calculator shows the milk value from the rates entered, before any of these adjustments.
Rates and rules change; check the source before you rely on a figure.
