When a job ends in the UK, the side ending it must give notice. This calculator works out the statutory minimum, compares it with your contract and gives the dates and the notice pay, following GOV.UK and Acas guidance.
Notice from an employer. After 1 month of service the employer must give at least 1 week. From 2 years it is 1 week for each full year of service, up to 12 weeks after 12 years. Only full years count: Acas's example of 4 years and 9 months earns 4 weeks. A contract can promise more, never less, so you get whichever is longer.
Notice from an employee. After 1 month in the job you must give at least 1 week, whatever your length of service. Most contracts ask for more, often 1 or 3 months, and the contract's notice is what you should give.
The dates. Notice usually starts the day after it is given. Weeks are counted in whole weeks, so 8 weeks given on Friday 16 October 2026 run to Friday 11 December. Months run to the same date: 3 months from 16 October end on 16 January. A letter counts from when you have had a reasonable time to read it, so set the date to that day.
Notice pay. You normally get your usual pay through the notice period. For redundancy, GOV.UK bases notice pay on your average weekly pay over the 12 weeks before the notice starts. Payment in lieu of notice pays the same and ends the job at once.
Not included. Gross misconduct, which can remove the right to notice; notice that both sides agree to shorten; breaks in continuous employment; and collective redundancy consultation. An estimate, not legal advice.

Count from the day after notice is given. Four weeks' notice given on Friday 16 October 2026 starts on Saturday 17 October 2026 and ends on Friday 13 November 2026, 28 days later. One month's notice given the same day ends on Monday 16 November 2026, so the two are not the same length. Notice from an employer is never shorter than the statutory minimum, and the calculator applies whichever is longer.
An employer owes 1 week after one month of service and until two full years, then one week for each full year: 5 weeks after 5 years, 10 after 10, and 12 weeks from 12 years on, the cap GOV.UK sets out. An employee who resigns owes 1 week whatever the service, unless the contract asks for more.
An employer must give at least 1 week's notice after 1 month of service, 1 week for each full year from 2 to 12 years, and 12 weeks after 12 years or more. A contract can give more notice than this but never less, so the longer of the two applies.
After 1 month in the job the law asks for at least 1 week's notice, however long you have worked. Your contract can ask for more, such as 1 or 3 months, and you should give that. Under 1 month, with no notice in your contract, none is required.
Notice normally starts the day after it is given. Notice of 8 weeks given on Friday 16 October 2026 starts on Saturday 17 October and ends on Friday 11 December 2026. A month's notice ends on the same date of the next month: 16 October to 16 November.
No. Statutory notice counts only full years of service. Acas gives the example of 4 years and 9 months, which earns 4 weeks of notice, not 5. The fifth week begins on the fifth anniversary of the start date, and service before 2 full years always gives 1 week.
Notice pay is normally your usual pay for the notice period. For redundancy, GOV.UK bases it on your average weekly pay over the 12 weeks before the notice starts. Eight weeks at £650 a week is £5,200. Payment in lieu of notice pays the same amount and ends the job at once.
Only in limited cases. Gross misconduct, such as violence, can justify dismissal without notice or notice pay. Otherwise an employer must give the longer of contractual and statutory notice, or pay in lieu if the contract allows it or you agree, and can face a wrongful dismissal claim if it does not.
