About the Prorated Salary Calculator

A salaried job that starts, ends or pauses partway through a pay period is paid for only part of that period. Employers prorate in one of three ways, and on the same dates the results can differ by several hundred dollars. This calculator works out all three so you can check a first or final paycheck, or plan an unpaid leave.

Calendar days. Pay for the period times the calendar days you were employed, divided by the calendar days in the period. Weekends count on both sides of the division.

Working days. Pay for the period times the working days you were employed, divided by the working days in the period. Working days are Monday to Friday, less the holidays you list. Enter your employer's holiday dates, one per line or separated by commas, as 2026-09-07 or 9/7/2026; holidays on a weekend are ignored.

Hours. The annual salary divided by the hours in a full working year, times the hours you worked. At 40 hours a week that year is 2,080 hours, so $78,000 is $37.50 an hour. Change the weekly hours if your employer uses 37.5 or another figure.

Pay for one period is the annual salary divided by the number of pay periods in a year: 52 weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month, or 12 monthly. For a monthly salary, set the pay period to the first and last day of the month.

What this calculator does not do: it shows gross pay only, before federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and benefit deductions. It does not add overtime, bonuses, commission or a payout of unused PTO, and it does not decide which method your employer must use. Your offer letter, handbook or payroll team says which one applies; this page lets you check their arithmetic.

Dates are counted as whole calendar days, so your time zone never moves a day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a prorated salary?

Work out the pay for one pay period, which is the annual salary divided by the pay periods in a year, then multiply by the share of the period you worked. On $78,000 paid monthly, that is $6,500 a month; working 13 of 21 working days gives $4,023.81, and 17 of 30 calendar days gives $3,683.33.

Should salary be prorated by calendar days or working days?

Either is common, and the employer's policy decides. Calendar days count weekends, so a start on a Monday late in the month is paid less. Working days count only Monday to Friday less holidays, which usually matches the days actually worked. Ask payroll or check the handbook, then compare both figures here.

Do holidays count when prorating salary?

Under the working-day method a paid holiday is usually left out of both counts, the days worked and the days in the period, which is what this calculator does with the dates you list. Some employers pay a holiday only to people employed on that day. Enter only the holidays your employer observes.

How many working hours are in a year?

A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, the figure most US employers use to turn a salary into an hourly rate. At 37.5 hours a week the year is 1,950 hours. The calculator uses the weekly hours you enter, so $78,000 is $37.50 an hour at 40 hours and $40.00 at 37.5.

Is my first paycheck prorated if I start mid-month?

Usually yes. A salaried employee who starts after the first day of a pay period is normally paid only for the part of the period worked. Payroll timing can also push the first check to the following payday. Enter your pay period and start date to see what the prorated amount should be before tax.

Does this include taxes and deductions?

No. The figures are gross pay before federal and state income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions and benefit premiums. Take-home pay will be lower. Use the prorated gross figure as the starting point in a paycheck or tax calculator for your state.

Formula only: no rates or limits are read from an official source.
