Cut up to 15 seconds out of a video and save it as a looping animated GIF

Processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Updated on 25 Oct 2026.

A GIF plays by itself, loops, and opens anywhere an image does, which is why a few seconds of video often travel better as one. Drop the video here, set where the clip starts and ends, and choose the width and frame rate. Every frame is drawn and encoded inside this page, so the video is never uploaded. The size is shown when it is done, with a warning if it is large.

  • Trim the video Cut several clips out of one video, keeping the original quality where it can
  • Take the sound out Take the sound out of a video and keep it exactly as it was recorded

How to convert a video to GIF

1

Press Choose a video or pictures and pick the video, such as an MP4 or a screen recording.

2

Play the preview and press Start here, then End here, to mark up to 15 seconds.

3

Choose a Width and Frames a second; fewer frames and a narrower width make a smaller file.

4

Press Make the GIF and then Download GIF; a warning shows if the GIF is large.

How Video to GIF works

Drop a video or a set of pictures on the page and an animated GIF comes back, drawn and encoded on your own device. The file is never uploaded, no account is asked for, and nothing is stamped on the picture.

From a video

Set where the clip starts and ends, up to 15 seconds, and choose a width and a frame rate between 5 and 15 frames a second. The page plays the video in the browser's own player, steps to each frame time and draws it, so any video your browser can play will work: MP4 with H.264 and WebM everywhere, MOV and HEVC depending on the browser and the device. A video smaller than the chosen width is kept at its own width, because enlarging a GIF adds bytes and no detail.

Why GIFs are large, and what this page does about it

A GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame and compresses each frame on its own, so it is often ten times the size of the video it came from. Three things keep it down here. One palette is chosen for the whole animation from frames across the clip, so colours do not flicker. After the first frame, only the rectangle that changed is stored, with the unchanged pixels left transparent. And dithering, which trades colour banding for a fine grain, can be switched off for flat graphics.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from a video without uploading it?

Drop the video on this page, set the start and end of the clip, up to 15 seconds, and press Make the GIF. The browser plays the video, draws each frame onto a canvas and encodes the GIF in the page itself, so no copy of the video is sent to any server.

Why is my GIF so much bigger than the video?

Video codecs store mostly the differences between frames, very efficiently. A GIF stores at most 256 colours per frame and compresses with LZW, which is far weaker. This page stores only the changed rectangle of each frame, but a busy clip still grows. A smaller width, fewer frames a second or fewer colours shrink it.

Can I make a GIF from several photos?

Add 2 to 60 pictures, arrange them with the arrows, and choose how long each one stays on screen, from 0.2 to 2 seconds. Pictures with a different shape from the first are fitted inside its frame on a white background, and transparent parts become white.

Does the GIF loop, and can it play only once?

By default the GIF loops forever, which is what browsers, chat apps and social sites expect. Choose Play once and the loop instruction is left out of the file, so a player shows the animation a single time and stops on the last frame.
