This calculator takes an Australian salary for the 2026-27 income year, 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, and works out what the employee keeps. It is built for a resident for the whole year who claims the tax-free threshold, is single and has no work deductions.
Income tax uses the 2026-27 resident rates. Nothing is due on the first $18,200. Income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 15%, down from 16% the year before, then 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above. The low income tax offset then takes up to $700 off the tax: the full $700 up to $37,500, reducing to nothing at $66,667. With the offset, a resident pays no income tax on a salary up to about $22,500.
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. Low incomes pay less: nothing up to $28,011, then 10 cents for each dollar above that until the levy reaches the full 2%. Those thresholds are the latest the ATO had published on 30 October 2026. If you have no private hospital cover and earn more than $105,000, switch on the surcharge option to add 1%, 1.25% or 1.5% of your income.
Super is shown, not deducted. Employers pay 12% super guarantee on top of the salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 for 2026-27. The salary you enter should not include it.
What it does not do. It does not model foreign residents, working holiday makers, work-related deductions, other offsets, family Medicare thresholds, HELP repayments or salary sacrifice. The tax withheld from each pay follows ATO tax tables and can differ slightly from the yearly figure, which your return settles. The Working Australians tax offset starts in 2027-28 and is not included. Every figure and its ATO page are listed on the calculator, checked on 30 October 2026. An estimate, not tax advice.
An Australian resident earning $80,000 in 2026-27 pays $14,520 income tax and a $1,600 Medicare levy, $16,120 in all. That leaves $63,880 a year, about $5,323 a month. The low income tax offset no longer applies at that salary. Your employer also pays $9,600 super on top.
For residents: nothing up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above $190,000. The 15% rate replaced 16% from 1 July 2026. The Medicare levy of 2% comes on top of these rates, according to the ATO's published table.
A reduction of up to $700 in the tax of Australian residents with a taxable income of $37,500 or less. Between $37,500 and $45,000 it falls by 5 cents per dollar, then by 1.5 cents per dollar until it reaches zero at $66,667. The offset cannot reduce tax below zero and is not paid out.
Single people without an appropriate level of private hospital cover pay the surcharge once their income for surcharge purposes is above $105,000 in 2026-27: 1% up to $123,000, 1.25% up to $164,000 and 1.5% above. The rate applies to the whole income, not only the part above the threshold.
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by the employer on top of your salary, so this calculator does not deduct it. Check whether a job offer is quoted as a package including super; if so, divide the package by 1.12 to find the salary to enter here.
Employers withhold tax each pay using ATO tax tables, which spread the yearly tax evenly and round it, while this calculator works out the tax for the whole year. The small difference is settled when you lodge your return. Deductions and other offsets you claim also change the final figure.
