PAYE holds two parts: income tax at 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000 and 39% above, plus the ACC earners' levy of 1.75%. On $70,000 a year PAYE is $14,445.50, which leaves $53,104.50 after 3.5% KiwiSaver.
From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 the levy is $1.75 per $100 of earnings, or 1.75%, on earnings up to $156,641. The most anyone pays is $2,741.22 a year. Employers collect it inside PAYE, so a payslip usually shows one PAYE figure.
The default employee rate and the matching employer rate rose from 3% to 3.5%. Members can still choose 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%, or apply for a temporary rate reduction to keep 3% for 3 to 12 months. A second step to 4% is due on 1 April 2028.
Borrowers with an SL tax code repay 12% of every dollar above the repayment threshold of $24,128 a year, or $464 a week. Someone earning $600 a week repays $16.32. Secondary jobs pay 12% of all their earnings, because the threshold is already used by the main job.
New Zealand tax residents earning $24,000 to $70,000 who do not receive Working for Families, an income-tested benefit or NZ Super. The credit is $10 a week, $520 a year, up to $66,000 of income, then falls by 13 cents per dollar until nothing remains at $70,000.
Yes. Employer contributions carry employer superannuation contribution tax (ESCT) at 10.5% to 39%, set by your salary plus the employer contribution. On $70,000 the employer's 3.5%, $2,450, is taxed at 30%, so $1,715 reaches your KiwiSaver account each year.
