Semesterersättning is the money a Swedish employer pays instead of holiday when a job ends before the paid holiday earned has been taken. This calculator follows the Semesterlag (1977:480) as published by the Riksdag, read on 16 October 2026.
The earning year. Holiday is earned in one year, 1 April to 31 March, and taken in the next. Choose the earning year and type the pay earned in it, without any holiday pay already received.
Days earned. A full year gives 25 paid holiday days. For part of a year, section 7 takes the days employed, subtracts whole days of unpaid absence, divides by the days in the earning year and multiplies by 25, rounding any fraction up. Sickness absence of up to 180 days still counts as employed. Six months, 183 days of 365, gives 12.53, rounded up to 13 days.
The percentage rule. Section 16 b sets holiday pay at 12% of the pay earned in the earning year. Those 12% pay for all the days earned, so each day is worth the total divided by the days earned: 480,000 kr gives 57,600 kr over 25 days, 2,304 kr a day.
Ending the job. Sections 28 and 29 say that holiday pay not yet received is paid as semesterersättning, worked out the same way. With 10 of the 25 days taken, the 15 left are worth 34,560 kr. Section 30 requires payment within a month of the job ending.
Not included. The same-pay rule many monthly-paid employees have, with its 0.43% supplement a day; saved days from earlier years; holiday pay received in advance; collective agreements with other rules; and tax. An estimate, not legal advice.

Semesterersättning is worked out like holiday pay. Under the percentage rule holiday pay is 12% of the pay earned in the earning year, which covers up to 25 days. Dividing by the days earned gives the value of a day, and the unused days are paid at that value when the job ends.
A full earning year gives 25 paid holiday days. For part of a year, take the days employed minus whole days of unpaid absence, divide by the days in the earning year and multiply by 25, rounding up. Working 183 days of a 365-day year earns 13 paid days.
The earning year, intjänandeår, runs from 1 April to 31 March. The paid holiday earned in it is taken in the following holiday year, which also runs from 1 April to 31 March. Holiday taken in summer 2026 was earned between April 2025 and March 2026.
Semester law section 30 requires the employer to pay semesterersättning without unreasonable delay and at the latest one month after the employment ends. The payment is gross pay, so tax is withheld, and it covers the paid holiday days earned but not taken by the last day of work.
Sickness absence of up to 180 days in an earning year counts as holiday-qualifying, so it does not reduce the paid days earned. Only whole days of absence without pay that are not holiday-qualifying are subtracted, such as unpaid leave of absence agreed with the employer.
Under the percentage rule holiday pay is 12% of the pay earned. Under the same-pay rule, used for many monthly-paid employees, you keep your normal salary on holiday and get a supplement of 0.43% of the monthly salary per day. Collective agreements often set their own rule.
