Choose Abfertigung Neu for jobs that began from 2003, or Alt for jobs that began earlier.
Type your gross monthly pay.
For Neu, add the special payments of a year and the contribution years; for Alt, the start and end dates.
Switch off the claim switch for a plain resignation or a dismissal for misconduct.
Read the amount: monthly pays owed under Alt, or the capital paid in under Neu.
This calculator works out Austrian severance pay under both systems, from the pages of the Unternehmensserviceportal (USP), the Federal Government's business portal.
Abfertigung Neu. For every job that began on or after 1 January 2003, the employer pays 1.53% of the monthly pay and of any special payments, such as the 13th and 14th salaries, into the employee's staff provision fund (BV-Kasse). The first month is free of contributions. The claim grows steadily instead of in steps.
A worked example. €3,500 a month and €7,000 of special payments make €49,000 a year; 1.53% of it is €749.70. After 10 years, €7,497.00 has been paid in. The capital guarantee means you get at least that; the fund's investment return comes on top and is not modelled here.
When Neu is paid out. After three contribution years, counting all employers, and an ending that keeps the claim: dismissal by the employer, mutual agreement, a justified early exit, a fixed term running out, or death. Otherwise nothing is lost; the money stays invested in the fund.
Abfertigung Alt. Jobs that began before 2003 keep the old system. After 3 years of service it pays 2 monthly pays, after 5 years 3, after 10 years 4, after 15 years 6, after 20 years 9 and after 25 years a full year's pay. The pay for the last month is the base. A plain resignation loses it, as does a dismissal for misconduct.
A second example. From 1 March 1998 to 31 August 2026 is 28 completed years, so a year's pay: 12 × €4,200 = €50,400.
Not included. The half amount in maternity or paternity cases, construction workers' own rules, a frozen Alt claim after switching to Neu, and income tax on the payout.

For jobs that began from 1 January 2003, the employer pays 1.53% of the monthly gross pay and of special payments into a BV-Kasse, with the first month free. On €3,500 a month plus €7,000 of special payments that is €749.70 a year, or €7,497.00 over 10 years.
Abfertigung Alt, for jobs that began before 2003, pays 2 monthly pays after 3 years of service, 3 after 5 years, 4 after 10, 6 after 15, 9 after 20 and a full year's pay after 25 years. The pay for the last month of the job is the base.
A payout can be claimed after three contribution years, counted across all employers, when the job ends by dismissal by the employer, mutual agreement, a justified early exit, the end of a fixed term or death. The request goes to the BV-Kasse in writing within six months.
No. Under the new system the capital stays yours whatever the way the job ends; after a plain resignation it simply stays invested in the BV-Kasse and can be claimed after a later qualifying ending or on retirement. Under Abfertigung Alt, a plain resignation loses the claim.
Yes, at least what was paid in. The USP explains that the capital in the BV-Kasse carries a capital guarantee, so a payout is never less than the employer's contributions. This calculator shows that guaranteed minimum; any investment return the fund earns is extra.
Abfertigung Alt applies to employment relationships that began before 1 January 2003, unless employer and employee agreed in writing to switch to the new system. Every job that began on or after that date falls under Abfertigung Neu, including freelance employees since 2008.
