Under § 10 of Ferieloven, holiday pay (feriepenger) is at least 10.2% of the pay earned in the previous year. Employers bound by a tariff agreement with five holiday weeks pay 12%. On 650,000 kroner that is 66,300 or 78,000 kroner.
The feriepengegrunnlag is the pay earned in the earning year: salary, overtime, bonus and commission for personal work. Expenses for travel, food and lodging, holiday pay paid that year, profit shares and benefits in kind are left out. The figure is on your employer's annual statement.
Employees who turn 60 during the holiday year get 6 extra holiday days and 2.3 percentage points more holiday pay: 12.5% under the law, or 14.3% with a five-week agreement. The extra 2.3% is not paid on pay above 6 G, 780,960 kroner for 2025.
The law gives four weeks and one day of holiday and 10.2%. Most tariff agreements add a fifth week, and Arbeidstilsynet says the ordinary rate is then 12%. The higher rate pays for the extra week, so it comes from the agreement, not from Ferieloven.
Ferieloven says the last ordinary payday before the holiday, but most employers pay all holiday pay in June instead of the June salary. An employee who leaves gets all earned holiday pay on the last ordinary payday before leaving.
Holiday pay is ordinary taxable income. Usually no tax is withheld from it in June, because the tax deducted from the other months is slightly higher instead; the payslip calls that a tax-free or half-tax month. The yearly tax ends up the same.
