This calculator works out the yearly tax on an employee's pay in Norway for 2026, from the rates Skatteetaten publishes for the income year.
Tax on alminnelig inntekt. From gross pay the minstefradrag (46%, at most 95,700 kr) and the personfradrag (114,540 kr) come off. What remains, the alminnelig inntekt, is taxed at 22%.
Trinnskatt. Gross pay above 226,100 kr is taxed in five steps: 1.7% to 318,300 kr, 4.0% to 725,050 kr, 13.7% to 980,100 kr, 16.8% to 1,467,200 kr and 17.8% above.
Trygdeavgift. The national insurance contribution is 7.6% of pay from age 17 to 69 and 5.1% outside that range. Pay up to 99,650 kr is free, and the charge never exceeds 25% of the pay above that.
A worked example. On 600,000 kr: 389,760 kr of alminnelig inntekt gives 85,747.20 kr tax, trinnskatt is 12,835.40 kr and trygdeavgift 45,600 kr. In all 144,182.60 kr, 24.03% of pay, leaving 455,817.40 kr.
Payslips. Employers withhold with Skatteetaten's tax tables, which do not spread the tax evenly over the months. The monthly figure here is a twelfth of the yearly tax.
Not included. Troms and Finnmark rates, interest and travel deductions, union dues, pension premiums and capital income.

Three taxes apply: 22% on alminnelig inntekt after the minstefradrag and the 114,540 kr personfradrag, trinnskatt from 1.7% to 17.8% on gross pay above 226,100 kr, and 7.6% trygdeavgift. On 600,000 kr a year the total is 144,182.60 kr, leaving 455,817.40 kr.
Gross pay up to 226,100 kr pays no trinnskatt. Step 1 is 1.7% up to 318,300 kr, step 2 is 4.0% up to 725,050 kr, step 3 is 13.7% up to 980,100 kr, step 4 is 16.8% up to 1,467,200 kr and step 5 is 17.8% above.
Employees aged 17 to 69 pay 7.6% of their pay, and people under 17 or over 69 pay 5.1%. Pay up to 99,650 kr is free of it, and just above that limit the charge can never exceed 25% of the pay over 99,650 kr.
The minstefradrag is a standard deduction of 46% of pay, at most 95,700 kr in 2026, that covers ordinary work costs. Skatteetaten applies it automatically. Anyone with higher real costs can claim those instead in the tax return. Pay above about 208,044 kr reaches the maximum.
Employers withhold tax each month with Skatteetaten's tax tables, which do not spread the tax evenly over the twelve months, and the yearly settlement corrects the difference. This calculator shows the result of the yearly tax divided by twelve, which matches the tax settlement rather than any single payslip.
Yes. Residents of the tiltakssonen in Troms and Finnmark pay 18.5% instead of 22% on alminnelig inntekt, and Skatteetaten notes further special rules for the zone. Those rules are not included here, so the result is too high for residents of the zone.
