About the Tanzania PAYE Calculator

This calculator turns a Tanzanian gross monthly salary into PAYE and net pay, using the Tanzania Revenue Authority's rates for resident individuals and the NSSF's contribution rules.

The order of the deductions. The employee's pension share comes off first: TRA's own PAYE calculator asks for pay after the NSSF or PSSSF contribution. PAYE is then charged on what is left.

The rates. Monthly taxable pay up to TSh 270,000 is not taxed. Then 8% of the excess up to TSh 520,000, TSh 20,000 plus 20% up to TSh 760,000, TSh 68,000 plus 25% up to TSh 1,000,000, and TSh 128,000 plus 30% above. TRA publishes the same table for Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

NSSF. Contributions are 20% of wage. Most employers split it 10% and 10%; the law also allows 15% from the employer and 5% from the employee, or the whole 20% from the employer. Choose your split and the tax base changes with it.

A worked example. TSh 1,500,000 a month with a 10% share: NSSF TSh 150,000, taxable pay TSh 1,350,000, PAYE TSh 233,000, net pay TSh 1,117,000.

What the employer adds. Its NSSF share and, for an employer with ten or more employees, the 3.5% Skills Development Levy on gross pay: TSh 202,500 on that salary, a monthly cost of TSh 1,702,500.

Not included. Non-residents, benefits in kind, the Workers Compensation Fund and second jobs. An estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are the PAYE rates in Tanzania?

Monthly taxable pay up to TSh 270,000 is not taxed. Above it TRA charges 8% up to TSh 520,000, 20% up to TSh 760,000, 25% up to TSh 1,000,000 and 30% on the rest. The tax at each step is TSh 20,000, 68,000 and 128,000.

Is NSSF deducted before PAYE in Tanzania?

Yes. TRA's own PAYE calculator asks for monthly pay after the NSSF or PSSSF contribution, so the employee's share comes off before tax. On TSh 1,500,000 a 10% share of TSh 150,000 leaves TSh 1,350,000 of taxable pay and TSh 233,000 of PAYE.

How much is NSSF contribution in Tanzania?

NSSF takes 20% of the employee's wage. The usual split is 10% from the employer and 10% from the employee; it can also be 15% and 5%, or the employer may pay all 20% without deducting anything from the employee's pay.

What is SDL in Tanzania?

The Skills Development Levy is 3.5% of the gross pay of all employees, paid by employers with ten or more employees. It is an employer cost and is not deducted from the employee's salary, so TSh 1,500,000 of pay carries TSh 52,500 of SDL.

Does Zanzibar have different PAYE rates?

No. The Tanzania Revenue Authority publishes the same monthly table for Tanzania Mainland and for Zanzibar: nil up to TSh 270,000, then 8%, 20%, 25% and 30%. Annual income of TSh 3,240,000, twelve times the monthly threshold, is not taxable.

How much is net pay on TSh 1,500,000 in Tanzania?

With NSSF at 10% the employee keeps TSh 1,117,000. NSSF takes TSh 150,000, and PAYE on the remaining TSh 1,350,000 is TSh 128,000 plus 30% of TSh 350,000, so TSh 233,000. The employer adds TSh 150,000 of NSSF and TSh 52,500 of SDL.
