Contributions. The employee pays 7.30% to the earnings-related pension, 0.89% unemployment insurance and, on wages of 17,255 euros or more a year, 0.88% to the sickness daily allowance. All three are deducted before tax.
Taxable income. A 750 euro deduction for the cost of earning income comes first. The basic deduction of up to 4,265 euros, falling by 18% of the income above it, helps low incomes.
State tax. 12.64% up to 22,000 euros, 19% to 32,600, 30.25% to 40,100, 33.25% to 52,100 and 37.5% above.
Municipal tax. Your municipality's rate, 7.60% on average, plus the parish tax if you belong to the church, and a 1.10% health care contribution.
Work credit. 18% of wages, at most 3,430 euros, reduced by 2% of net income between 35,000 and 50,550 euros. It comes off state tax first, then off the local taxes.
A worked example. On 3,500 euros a month (42,000 a year): contributions 3,809.40 euros, state tax 6,259.08 less the 3,305 work credit, local taxes 3,257.34 and YLE tax 160. In all 10,180.82 euros, leaving 31,819.18, about 2,652 euros a month.

From gross pay come the employee's pension contribution of 7.30%, unemployment insurance of 0.89% and the 0.88% daily allowance contribution. Taxable income then pays state tax from 12.64%, municipal tax and a 1.10% health care contribution, less the work credit. A 3,500 euro monthly salary leaves about 2,652 euros at the average municipal rate.
Taxable earned income pays 12.64% up to 22,000 euros, 19% from 22,000 to 32,600, 30.25% to 40,100, 33.25% to 52,100 and 37.5% above. The tax at 52,100 euros is 11,053.55. Vero says the reform lowered the top marginal tax rate to 52% in 2026.
The työtulovähennys is 18% of wage income, at most 3,430 euros. Above 35,000 euros of net earned income it falls by 2% of the excess, but only up to 50,550 euros, so it never drops below 3,119 euros. It comes off state tax first and any rest off municipal tax.
Anyone whose income after the other deductions is low. The full basic deduction is 4,265 euros and it shrinks by 18% of the income above that, so in 2026 nothing is left once income passes about 27,959 euros. It applies in both state and municipal taxation.
Vero's decision on the 2026 rates gives the average municipal income tax rate as 7.60%. Each municipality sets its own rate, so check yours on the tax card or the list on vero.fi. Church members also pay a parish tax of their parish's rate.
The public broadcasting tax is 2.5% of net income above 15,150 euros, at most 160 euros a year, for everyone aged 18 or over. Anyone earning about 21,550 euros or more of net income pays the full 160 euros. No deductions reduce it.
