Overtime pay from monthly wages or an hourly rate: double rate in India, 1.5x in the US
Estimates only, not financial advice. What you type stays on your device. Checked against sources on 30 Sept 2026.Overtime pays time and a half, 1.5 times the regular rate, over 40 hours a week under US federal law, and twice the normal rate over 8 hours a day or 48 a week under Indian law. Pay is overtime hours times the hourly rate times that multiplier: on ₹26,000 of monthly wages in India, 10 overtime hours pay ₹2,500.
Rates and rules read from the sources listed on this page (the earliest on 30 Sept 2026); they may have changed since.

Overtime is simple multiplication once the ordinary hourly rate is known, and that rate is where most payslip disputes start. This calculator shows the rate, the overtime rate, the overtime pay and the total for the period, with the working on screen so each step can be checked.
India. The four Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025. The Code on Wages, 2019 (section 14) pays work beyond a normal working day at not less than twice the normal rate of wages, and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 (sections 25 and 27) sets 8 hours a day and pays overtime at twice the rate of wages, counted daily or weekly, whichever gives the worker more. The Ministry of Labour's FAQ of 16 March 2026 puts the weekly limit at 48 hours. The old Factories Act rule of 9 hours a day was repealed by the OSH Code.
From a monthly salary. The Codes do not give one formula for every employer. The Code on Wages (Central) Rules turn a daily minimum wage into an hourly one by dividing by 8 and into a monthly one by multiplying by 26, so the default here is monthly wages divided by 26 days and 8 hours. Both numbers are editable, because a state rule or your contract may use others. "Wages" in the Code means basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance; most other allowances are left out, so enter the figure your payroll uses.
United States. The Fair Labor Standards Act pays at least one and a half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Under 29 CFR 778.113, a monthly salary becomes a weekly one by multiplying by 12 and dividing by 52, and is then divided by the hours it is meant to cover. Some states, California among them, add daily overtime.
What it does not do. It does not decide whether you are entitled to overtime: managers, some supervisors and exempt US employees may not be. It does not round part hours, apply overtime caps or deduct tax. Currency changes the symbol only.
Overtime is paid at twice the normal rate of wages for work beyond 8 hours in a day or 48 hours in a week, under the Code on Wages section 14 and the OSH Code sections 25 and 27, in force since 21 November 2025. Multiply the ordinary hourly rate by 2, then by the overtime hours.
Divide the monthly wages by the working days in the month and then by the normal hours in a day. The Code on Wages (Central) Rules use 26 days and 8 hours for minimum wages, so ₹26,000 becomes ₹125 an hour and ₹250 an hour at double rate. Your contract or state rule may use different numbers.
No. The Factories Act, 1948 paid double rate over 9 hours a day or 48 a week, but the OSH Code, 2020 repealed it. The Ministry of Labour's FAQ of 16 March 2026 says overtime is due over 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week, counted whichever way favours the worker.
The Code on Wages counts basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance as wages and leaves out most other allowances, such as house rent and conveyance; if those left-out parts exceed half of the total pay, the excess counts as wages. Enter the monthly figure your payroll uses for the overtime rate; basic plus DA is the usual starting point.
Time and a half is 1.5 times the regular hourly rate, which the Fair Labor Standards Act requires for hours over 40 in a workweek for covered, non-exempt employees. At $20 an hour, each overtime hour pays $30. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime or double time.
Yes. The multiplier box accepts any value from 1 to 5, so a contract that pays 1.25, 1.75 or 2.5 times can be entered directly. The India and US presets only set the legal minimum; an employer may always pay more, and the result updates as soon as the multiplier changes.
